secularisation and repurposing

After Switzerland became the last European country to grant civil rights to Jews in 1866, they gradually left the community of Hegenheim. Court records from 1920 show that the synagogue was abandoned because most of the Jews had left the area.

After the death of artist Walter Gürtler, who had lived and worked in the synagogue for 50 years. the property was sold in 2014 to Daniel Chiquet, a sculptor and goldsmith from Allschwil. Chiquet recognised the potential and sound structure of the building and enthusiastically set about renovating the spacious premises. However, unforeseeable twists and turns meant that Daniel Chiquet soon had to look for new buyers.

In order to prevent the building from falling into the hands of property speculators, he founded the Synagoge Hegenheim association, which was intended to give direction to the future of the old synagogue. Artist Mimi von Moos joined the association's board in 2016 and finally succeeded in purchasing the building in the summer of 2019 to ensure the continuation of the association's goals.
